One prevalent type happens in both men and women and it is called androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness. This type of baldness is genetic and its traits are weakened strands of hair and slow hair growth. Family history of pattern baldness raises the risk, and age is another factor in the extent of hair loss.
Cicatricial alopecia is another type, which is generally known as scarring alopecia, and the hair loss is a result of inflammation and is permanent. Inflammation damages the hair follicles, resulting in scars, which keep new hair from coming out. Some skin problems, like lichen planus and lupus erythematosus, may cause scarring alopecia, but the cause of the inflammation still is not known to the experts. There is another type of hair loss known as alopecia areata which is also considered an autoimmune condition. The root cause of the condition is not known, but it still is part of this group. The people who typically suffer from this ailment are basically healthy, but it might be caused by an autoimmune disorder like a thyroid illness. It might also be genes or a certain virus that comes to the people when they spend a lot of time in an environment.
Telogen effluvium is yet another type of hair loss that comes about when there is a change in the normal hair cycle. A shock to the system, which can be physical or mental, may be the cause of hair growth being halted too soon. Those who fall into a deep depression due to extremely stressful events may find themselves with telogen effluvium. Issues with metabolism, abrupt weight gain or loss or other physiologic stressors could also trigger abrupt hair loss.
Traction alopecia is a more recent form of hair loss that’s been rising the last couple of decades. This type of hair loss is triggered by over styling of the hair. Since the hair is constantly being yanked and tugged, the roots become weaker and weaker until it can’t grow hair again.
